For most amateurs, the useful driver pattern is launch around 12 to 15 degrees with spin in the mid-2,000s. Faster players can go lower on spin. Do not chase low spin by itself. A 1,600 rpm driver that launches at 8 degrees is usually not optimized. It is under-launched and may fall out of the air. The best driver setup is boring on a monitor: solid ball speed, stable launch, repeatable spin, and a carry number you can trust.
Irons: Launch and Spin Need to Hold Greens
With irons, the goal changes. You are not trying to maximize roll. You are trying to carry the right distance and stop the ball near that carry number. That means spin and descent angle matter more than total distance.
A modern 7-iron that launches at 15 degrees with 4,500 rpm might look powerful, but it can land too flat and release through the green. A 7-iron launching at 18 degrees with 6,200 rpm is often more useful because the ball lands softer. This is where ego distance can be misleading. The longest iron is not always the best scoring iron.

Wedges: Control Beats Maximum Spin
Wedge launch and spin are highly sensitive to lie, grooves, moisture, and ball model. A clean full wedge might spin over 10,000 rpm. A wedge from damp rough can come out with far less spin and more release. This is normal, not necessarily a technique failure.
The better goal is predictable launch windows. Know how high your stock pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge, and lob wedge launch on full swings. High launch, high spin: Often too much dynamic loft, weak contact, or a glancing strike. With driver, this can balloon. With wedges, it may simply be a normal high-loft shot.
Low launch, low spin: Often strong loft, thin contact, or low dynamic loft. With irons, this creates shots that fly long and will not hold greens.
Low launch, high spin: Often steep delivery or poor strike. The shot may climb late and carry shorter than expected.
